9-9-11 Photo of the Day

This is Harry Marrington, I met Harry yesterday at the Victoria train station in London. Harry served with the Royal Navy during World War II, he brought the 29th Division to Omaha beach on D-Day.  Harry told me his role in bringing the men to the beach and how the attack unfolded in front of him ....  Harry I salute you and all the men and women who have served in the armed forces.  Thank you

  1. Puts things into perspective, doesn't it?

He looks like a fine proud man. A real hero.

  3. What an amazing guy with an amazing story. I can't imagine the hell he saw that day. You forgot to share that the unit he carried was from NY! I'm very proud of you for such an amazing photo that I know was very close to your heart. Great photo, Ger!

  4. Thanks for sharing this hero's story. Wish we could properly document all these old vets' accounts of their service, so when they're gone we don't forget. Great picture. Those creases in his forehead hold the concern of decades. It's a reminder that for each person you pass on the street, you never know where they've been and what riches of wisdom they could share if you only asked. Thanks for asking Harry, Gerry!

  5. Thanks for all the wonderful feed back and comments about Harry.

    He is a real Hero

Im sure he has tons of great stories and we should document what they have to say because like Sharon said when they are gone so are their stories.

  6. Beautiful portrait Gerry. In the US there is an organization called "StoryCorps" that records and preserves the stories of "ordinary" Americans. NPR runs a selection - not sure how often - but maybe they have a similar program in the UK?
